Karhu Running Shoes
The company name was changed to Karhu, which means bear in Finnish. "The Flying Finns" dominated the world's running tracks, making Karhu a global phenomenon. Paavo Nurmi's nine Olympic gold medals also contributed to this.
Karhu officially registered the well-known M symbol. The symbol is used on its running shoes. The M refers to "Mestari," which means "champion" in Finnish. Over the years, Karhu has used various variations of the M symbol on its shoes. It is still used today.
Driven by a desire for constant innovation, Karhu developed the first patented "Air Cushion" midsole system for Karhu running shoes. This system was later introduced in the lifestyle collection as well.
In collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä in Finland, Karhu developed the "Fulcrum" technology. The Fulcrum is a cushioning system designed to generate forward momentum while running. You can read more about it on our running page.
Ortix-Fit is the midsole and upper shape of our running shoes. This shape was developed based on foot shape data collected from 2 million runners. What began in 2018 with the launch of the Karhu Ikoni, the first Ortix-based model, has resulted in three Karhu models based on Ortix-Fit. Today, we also offer a HiVo (more volume) and Hera (specifically for women) Ortix-Fit shape.
